Lumberjacks Strike Fast, Beat Star City

The Warren Lumberjacks finally got to play a home football game at Jim Hurley, Jr. Stadium Friday night after four weeks on the road. It was kind of an unusual game as the Jacks ran only 13 offensive plays in the first half, yet scored at will. Of the 13 plays, only two were runs. Star City tried to run the ball and eat clock. They were effective at times but penalties for chop blocks and holding hurt them.

Warren kicked off and the Lumberjack defense forced a punt and the Jacks took over on their own 46-yard line. On the first play quarterback J'malachi Kinnard dropped back and hit Treylon Burks for a 54-yard touchdown pass. Jesus Tinoco made the PAT and Warren jumped ahead 7-0. Star City drove the ball the next series and with 4:08 remaining in the first quarter, Braden Curry intercepted a Star City pass and the Jacks took possession. Warren was forced to punt but got the ball back and Kinnard again hit Burks for 56-yards and a TD. Tinoco made the point after and the score was 14-0 in favor of the Lumberjacks. Star City then got a big kick off return to Warren's thirty two yard line.

In the second quarter, Star City scored on a three yard run and made the point after, leaving the score 14-7. On the next Lumberjack possession, Kinnard hit Burks again and the result was a 42-yard touchdown. Tinoco was on the mark and the score was 21-7. The Lumberjack defense then forced a punt and with 1;04 left in the first half, Vincent Stepps ripped off a 13-yard TD run and Tinoco hit the PAT to make the halftime score 28-7.

Star City opened the second half with an onside kick and recovered the ball. Warren's defense held on downs. The offense with Burks at quarterback moved inside the Bulldog three and fumbled. Star City got the ball back was was force to punt and Burks returned the punt 57-yards for a touchdown. Tinoco made the extra point and Warren led 35-7. On the following kickoff Star City fumbled and Tinoco, the kicker recovered advanced the ball several yards. Burks then hit Keemontrae McKnight for 16-yards and a touchdown. Tinoco then made the score 42-7 with another successful PAT. Star City broke the next kickoff to Warren's thirty where Tinoco made the tackle. The Warren defense held.

In the fourth quarter, J.J. Hampton picked up a fumble and raced 91-yards for a Lumberjack touchdown and Tinoco made the point after and Warren led 49-7. Later Warren's Braden Jones intercepted a Star City pass. The game ended with a final score of 49-7.

The Jacks are now 2-0 in conference 84A and will face a good Dumas team Friday night at Jim Hurley, Jr. Stadium. Warren is now halfway through the regular season. All remaining games are conference cont... Click here to read full article
